mo communities protest against rape, attacks by herdsmen
Several farmlands in Imo State have been devastated as Fulani cattle breeders raped natives in communities where their cattle grazed.
Following this development, the Committee Against Menace of Fulani Herdsmen and State Neglect stormed the state House of Assembly yesterday to protest destruction of their farmlands and several rape cases recorded in various communities in the state.
The committee’s spokesperson, Mr. Christian Anihe, said their crops had all been destroyed. Anihe bemoaned the alarming cases of rape, assault and murder of women by the Fulani herdsmen.
According to him, women no longer go to their farms for fear of being attacked.
He also recalled a clash with the herdsmen in 2010 which resulted in the death of three members of one of the communities. Anihe called on the Assembly to react urgently to the problem to forestall further breakdown of law and order if the communities decided to defend themselves.
The zonal chief of the Akanu, Ihe and Umuakpu communities, Mr. Sabastine Eze, said the assistance given to flood victims should be extended to them. He called on the Assembly to react swiftly to avoid retaliation by the Ohaji Egbema people.
The House member representing Ohaji Egbema state constituency, Hon. Luke Chukwu, also decried the devastation of the people’s farmlands by cattle. He condemned the violence unleashed on the people by the herdsmen.
The Deputy Speaker, Donatus Ozoemena, promised that the Assembly would adopt a swift and precise approach to provide a lasting solution to the problem in the area, while commending the people for maintaining peace.
