Reps intervene in Kogi-Anambra oil well dispute
The
House of Representatives yesterday directed its committees on Special
Duties and Disaster and Emergency Management to liaise with the National
Boundary Commission, NBC, on the lingering clashes between Enugu-Otu,
Nkpunado and Eziagulu-Otu communities of Aguleri in Anambra East Local
Government of the state and Olu communities of Ibaji Local Government of
Kogi State, over the oil rich land.
The decision of the House to give the committees the mandate, arose
from a motion sponsored by Hon. Chriscato Amaeke (PDPAnambra), seeking
the intervention of the House.
Hon. Amaeke, who represents Anambra East and West in the House,
brought the motion entitled: “Urgent Need to Stop the Boundary Conflict
between Aguleri Communities of Anambra East LGA of Anambra State and Olu
Communities of Ibaji LGA of Kogi State,” under Matters of Urgent
National Importance.
He said the “lingering boundary conflict between Enugu-Otu, Mkpunado
and Eziagulu-Otu communities (Odeke, Asonwa and Ayeke) of Ibaji LGA of
Kogi State,” emanated from “the claim of ownership of oil well” in the
area.
He regretted that a recent resurgence of the conflict resulted in
killing and abduction of innocent people, burning of houses, farmlands,
livestock and properties worth millions of naira in these areas.”
He added that at the last count, 12 people have been confirmed dead in my community, Aguleri-Otu.
