Nigeria’s Defence Headquarters, on Friday night in Abuja, announced
that troops have rescued the Emirs earlier kidnapped by Boko Haram
insurgents while travelling to Gombe for the funeral of the late Emir of
Gombe, Alhaji Shehu Abubakar.
A statement from the DHQ said the military responded swiftly to the
information by deploying crack troops in pursuit of the attackers.
Spokesman of the Defence Headquarters, Major General Chris Olukolade,
who signed the statement, said the Emirs of Uba and Askira have been
successfully rescued and escorted to safety while the body of the Emir
of Gwoza, Alhaji Idrisa Timta, who died in the attack, had been
recovered.
He said troops were promptly deployed to the scene although soldiers
located at Garkida, who were alerted about the attack, responded
immediately by embarking on hot pursuit of the terrorists.
“Troops are currently on aggressive patrol along the entire route
with a view to apprehending the perpetrators and keeping the area safe,”
Major General Olukolade said.
A band of terrorists on Friday attacked the convoy of the Emirs of
Gwoza, Alhaji Idrisa Timta, Emir of Uba, Alhaji Ismaila Mamza and the
Emir of Askira who were travelling to Gombe for the funeral of the late
Emir of Gombe, Alhaji Shehu Abubakar who passed away recently.
Major General Olukolade also disclosed that raids carried out by
troops of the Special Task Force operating in the north-central parts of
the country led to the arrest of 23 members of armed gangs terrorizing
the region.
He explained that the suspects, including a hard drugs supplier, were
apprehended during raids on camps and criminal hideouts located in
Bukuru, Jos South and Barkin Ladi general areas.
Olukolade further said that all the suspects are currently undergoing
preliminary investigations, before being handed over to appropriate
