Religious Body Declares ‘War’ On Boko Haram

After two explosive devices were defused by the Anti-bomb Unit of police at the Winners Chapel on Port Harcourt road in Owerri, on Sunday, the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, in Imo State has called on Christians in the state to embark on fasting and prayers to fight terrorism spiritually.

The News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, reports that the Chairman of CAN in Imo, Bishop Stanford Nwogu, made the call during interview on Monday.

The religion leader said: “Time has come for every Christian to embark on fasting and prayers. The battle is a spiritual one which should be tackled spiritually.’’

Nwogu enjoined Christians all over the country to join in the spiritual battle against attacks by terrorists.

“This spiritual fight should not be left to Imo indigenes alone, but should be a collective effort among all Christians”, he said.

The bishop said Imo Government should not take the matter for granted, but make sure that those involved in the wicked act were brought to book.

“This issue should not be politicised, everybody, irrespective of their political leanings, must join in the efforts to arrest the perpetrator of the evil act.’’



He urged Christians to be more conscious of the happenings around them and report any suspicious movement to the security agencies

Meanwhile, while commenting on the explosive devices found on Sunday, the Commissioner of Police in Imo State, Mr Abdulmajid Ali, said the devices were capable of killing people within the range of 50 kilometres.

Though no group has claimed responsibility for the planned attack, many people believe it could be planned by the Boko Haram insurgents.

The Islamists sect is believed to have killed more than 4,000 innocent lives in different heinous attacks across Nigeria since 2009.
