Police, The Sun hold National Security Summit August 17
THE Nigeria Police will hold a one-day National Security Summit with the theme, “Community Partnership Approach to Internal Security and Crime Management” in collaboration with The Sun Publishing Limited, publisher of Daily Sun, Saturday Sun, Sunday Sun and Soccer Star newspapers.
Concerned over the growing violent crimes and insurgence, the present leadership of the Nigeria Police believes that a summit of this magnitude will help strengthen partnerships among law enforcement agencies and relevant stakeholders, with a view to creating the right synergy and multifaceted approach to addressing the current national security challenges.
Slated for Monday, August 17, 2015 at International Conference Centre (ICC), Abuja, the rationale for the summit is predicated on the belief of the Police that the business of policing is the responsibility of all.
THE Inspector General of Police, Mr. Solomon Arase, said the primary objective of the National Security Summit is to facilitate a meeting of all relevant stakeholders from all walks of life to make informed input into concerted efforts of the Police and other security agents geared at providing lasting solutions to Nigeria’s myriad of security challenges.
“Addressing security challenges requires a multifaceted approach that ranges from social, economic to security strategies as well as the involvement of all relevant stakeholders. Keeping Nigeria safe is everybody’s business,” he stressed.
Arase disclosed that President Muhammadu Buhari would personally attend the summit and declare it open.
The Managing Director and Editor-in-Chief of The Sun Publishing Limited, Mr. Eric Osagie, said the relevance of the media cannot be overemphasised in effective and efficient policing as well as creating collaborative partnerships among government security agencies, businesses, communities and citizens to better implement public safety strategies.
Osagie expressed happiness over the collaboration with the police, saying the summit will avail Nigerians from all parts of the country a common avenue to dialogue and work as a team in tailoring solutions to the fast-growing insurgency and crime.
“The media, by virtue of their responsibilities, are natural partners with law enforcement agencies. Media provide the connecting and communication platform that is crucial in creating meaningful partnerships for effective policing,” he explained.
Osagie pledged to use the media might of The Sun stable of newspapers to ensure the success of the summit.
Chiefs of military and para-military agencies, National Security Adviser, state governors, principal officers of the National Assembly and state Houses of Assembly, security experts, traditional rulers, corporate chieftains and religious leaders are expected to participate at the summit.
Others include chairmen and secretaries of political parties, ambassadors of foreign countries, labour leaders, presidents of professional bodies, chairmen of ethnic forums and civil society groups.
While noting that feedbacks from these expected participants at the summit will be instructive in developing renewed multidimensional tactics in tackling the current security challenges, Arase implored the participants to make sincere and informed input on matters bordering on the general security of Nigeria and Nigerians.
